Transforming a Victorian Home in Blackheath: Where Science Meets Maximalism
This stunning Victorian house in Blackheath, originally featuring a commercial space on the ground floor, presented a unique challenge in its conversion to a family home. Despite its generous proportions, the layout required thoughtful remodelling to optimise the flow and functionality of the space for everyday living.
One of the most striking elements of the renovation was the transformation of the basement kitchen. Originally with low ceilings, the space was reimagined and opened up to create a dramatic two-storey volume, extending up to form an atrium with the ground floor. A key feature of the design is the client’s bespoke light fixture, inspired by the intricate workings of a Quantum computer, which serves as a stunning focal point. The room was then enlarged into the garden with a picture window pulling in light to the basement. The space houses the new hand built kitchen, dining and family area. This gives a sense of grandeur but also significantly enhanced the sense of light and space and connection with the rest of the house.
The staircase was removed and repositioned to serve as a central element of circulation throughout the building. The new design incorporates suspended elements in steel, clad in timber and with a continuous oak handrail that elegantly guides the eye and as a smooth tactile element as you move through the space. This visually striking staircase is not only functional, but also a beautiful piece of craftsmanship made into as a sculptural feature that complements the style of the home while respecting its Victorian heritage.
On the first floor, the design features two bedrooms, both equipped with air conditioning and built in wardrobes. A study on this level provides a quiet, dedicated space for work, featuring restored triple sash windows and abundant natural light.
The family bathroom is tiled in rich jewel tones that add warmth to the space. The bathroom’s luxurious feel is further elevated by Pierre Frey wallpaper and brass fittings.
The top floor is dedicated entirely to the master suite. The bathroom is a spa-like retreat, where hand-made Zellige tiles in rich, earthy tones create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A walk-in shower and a soaking tub are positioned beneath a skylight, allowing natural light to flood the space creating a private sanctuary. Adjacent to the bathroom, a spacious dressing area offers the perfect blend of luxury and functionality. A large dressing table was built into the curved space, offering ample space for preparing in style for the client’s media appearances. Thoughtfully designed storage ensures everything is easily accessible while maintaining a clean, uncluttered space. New Crittal windows and doors were installed in the master bedroom leading out to a private balcony with sweeping views over London.
The interior design of the home was conceived to be opulent and vibrant, creating a warm, abundant atmosphere that reflects both creativity and functionality. The use of rich textures, bold colours, and luxurious materials gives the space a sense of femininity and artistic flair, while the overall layout ensures that it is not only visually stunning but also highly practical and comfortable for family living. The completed project achieves a perfect balance between beauty and functionality, making this home not just a space to admire, but a truly liveable, welcoming environment for its owners.
